If you're a fan of The Tragically Hip, then you definitely know about the Bill Barilko story. But if you want to venture beyond the fifty mission cap, read this book by Kevin Shea. From his humble beginnings in Timmins, Ontario, hockey allowed Barilko to escape the mines as he headed west to play in Hollywood, California of all places. Called up by the Leafs in 1947, Bashin' Bill would end up being an integral part of a dynasty that dominated the late 40s. And his untimely death in 1951 after scoring the Stanley Cup winning goal in OT is a movie producer's dream come true. Barilko was a great read and is especially recommended for those who weren't born during his era of hockey. You'll learn not only how dominant the Leafs were back then but also how the game has changed so much, for better or for worse.
