This is a troubling, difficult story that takes you to a place and circumstance, a desperation and level of poverty, that is a bit like having a terrible dream you want so badly to awaken from and yet realize the next day has left you with a message you will not forget. I have read all of McCarthy's books, this being the last. For me, the writing of this story is his greatest writing of all. But beware. The story that emerges is very ugly. Like Neil Young once said about a sad song he'd written: it starts out depressing and goes downhill from there. Not unique to this of his books, McCarthy has created some characters so horrific and vicious that it makes the story difficult to endure. I suggest reading this story for it's poetry and larger message, knowing that it's a story you won't forget....even if there are parts of it you'd prefer you could.
