Yea! An author who understands the incredible importance of the first sentence: "As Mickey Stillson stared at the gun in his hand, he absentmindedly reached up and adjusted the fake ear that was his entire disguise and wondered how a born-again Christian like himself had wound up in the middle of a bank robbery." Boom! Right away I am engaged. Fake ear? Huh. As it turns out, Mickey (with or without his fake ear) is pretty much irrelevant to the story. Doesn't matter, he's done his job. I am committed to The Bricklayer. Despite the "official" reviews that are faintly disparaging of the plot and the main character, Vail, I enjoyed both and look forward to the next book.
