SUMMARY: Pirate Pete shows up in the Seabreezy Library looking for treasure. He stomps in making noise and smelling up the place. But Library Lou stares him down, tells him to be quiet, go home and take a bath and then she will help him find the treasure. When he returns(squeaky clean), Library Lou teaches Pete his alphabet. Pete practices until he able to read words and then books. He realizes that the treasure to be found in the library is the books. ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations are absolutely extraordinary! Amazing facial expressions that draw you in, incredible lines and details, gorgeous use of color that makes the book feel modern, yet old timey. I loved every picture on every page! THE GOOD: I admit I am a sucker for a good pirate picture book. But this book has so much to offer. The rhyming is fun and works well, there is humor throughout the book--so much so I laughed out loud in several spots--and the illustrations are fantastic. The book gets a bit slow in the last few pages, but the rest of the book makes up for it. This book would be great for introducing students to libraries and the concept of reading on one's own. I think every librarian should own a copy. And what a great gift it would be for your favorite librarian! AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 1-3
