Historically impossible. By episode 2, one of the MI-5 officers suggests that "Operation Glass," which is clearly directed against Britain, might be a "pre-emptive strike," that is, a nuclear attack intended to prevent retaliation. But this does not cause consultation with the CIA or America, with its massive ICBM force, which would have had to be "pre-empted" too. Writer Toby Whithouse apparently would have us believe that the Cold War was between the big, bad Soviet Union and brave little Great Britain, with America an insignificant bystander. I am neither nationalistic nor political, but whatever other accuracy is shown, all historical realities apply.
This reminds me of the BBC's announcement on August 6, 1945 that Hiroshima was destroyed by a bomb developed by "British and American scientists." Really? The Manhattan project was authorized by Churchill, J. Robert Oppenhiemer was a Brit, New Mexico is in Scotland, and the Enola Gay was a Lancaster? Historical accuracy transcends nationalistic bragging rights, not that making war is ever anything to brag about.
No offense, Britain. But the "Mother Country" is now in assisted living.
