I read all the books, just to see what all the fuss was about. Interesting , unusual fantasy and love story. The movie was not even close to being like the book. The biggest problem I had was with the choice to make Christian have sex with her knowing she was a vergin. This is an important and drasric change from the original charachter. He never would have had sex knowing she was a virgin, in the book, she did not tell him before they copulated. .This is key in establishing his moral values, and they sadly chose to change this. The movie was slow, silly, predictable, lacking in dialogue, acting and did not remain true to the books in regards to building the characters and their personalities and motives. Probably appeals to teenagers, and twenty somethings, and others with very immature and unrealistic views and beliefs of relationship, sex, love, life, etc., who know nothing (other than myths, steretupes and hype - ) of the real sexual varieties many humans explore. A modern , juvenile, "coming of age", titty teaser, "romance novel", type film, I guess , for the newer generation. I still do not understand all the hype for the books or the movies. A waste of celluloid, other than showing off nice locations in Canada. A fantasy "Cinderella" (poor girl meets rich prince) story with a silly sexual power play twist. Only real themes: Who really has the power, the dominant (who needs this outlet of recreating hs own - ..because of repressed and not dealt with, childhood abuse and trauma) or the submissive, who chooses, is experimenting (in her RARE case) has self awareness, boundaries, intellect, self esteem and can stop the interactin at any time... Fractured love story.. Does in no way depict reality in any sense of the very few topics covered. I am sure the set grips, photographers, and all other people working on this film were much more entertained than any one who watched , or will watch the finished feature. It is directed by a woman, whch is very interesting, and makes me ver curious why she strayed so far off the book, also written by a woman. Clear case of a profit seeking - business woman, tv writer , creating a profit based franchise with the sole purpose of profit. Knowing full well, with years in advertising, that her 3 books would sell like hot cakes, knowing the market she was sellimg to, one after the other - (glorified "romance" novelist") and then be made and sold - into film. She had and executed a great plan for her business .. Cudos to her. The movie, though, leaves room for MUCH improvement in casting, acting especially, and story telling / dialogue.
