This is a kind of strange movie about fairy tales which are Grimmer than Brothers Grimm and definitely won't be confused with cute and cuddly Disneyified fables that people are use to today. Italian director Matteo Garrone who is shooting in English with an international cast adapts tales by Giambattista Basile from 1634 AD which later inspired the Grimm Brothers in 1812. There are three tales that are dark, violent and have the message of be careful for what you wish for. If there is one flaw in the film is that it starts very slowly and feels a bit clunky at first but it does get better as it goes along drawing the viewer in. One of those odd films that for some reason has remained in my mind while some blockbusters are forgotten a day later.
